The pursuit of the greatest degree of safety in the workplace, aimed at minimising occupational risks in all phases of corporate activity, has led to recognition in the form of OHSAS 18001 certification, which is also part of the BEST 4 scheme. To this end, over the years Costa Crociere has adopted a series of procedures in line with the most stringent standards stipulated on an international level.
These safety regulations are very extensive. In Italy, they are based on Law 626 for shoreside employees and Laws 271 and 272 for shipboard employees (at sea and in port). In addition, all vessels are required to have an internationally certified Safety Management System (SMS). To obtain this certification, Costa Crociere adopted a set of procedures ensuring very high safety standards as long ago as the early 1990s.
The level of excellence attained by Costa Crociere is confirmed by the high scores obtained at the many (scheduled and unannounced) inspections conducted both by national flag administrations (Coastguards) and by local authorities. The Company boasts a similar record in the area of occupational health thanks to rigorous crew training programmes, environmental health audits, and regular sampling and analysis.
What's more, both the Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea have scored full marks of 100 in the periodical US Public Health Service Inspections, which is an exceptional feat.
Further confirmation came in 2002, when Costa Crociere was assigned the "ROME" (Reliability and Optimisation of Marine Activities for the Environment) award by CONFITARMA (the Italian Shipowners' Confederation) in recognition of the Company's emphasis on safety and environmental compliance.
